About this course

Children and young people are exposed to a range of media content in today’s world at fast speed. Media literacy is therefore becoming an essential skill for parents and carers to help support their children and young people navigate this complex landscape critically and safely. Understanding the draw of media, an awareness of its impact on thinking, emotions, relationships and behaviour at different ages and promoting responsible use of content, creation and connection will not only help parents and carers be less confused (and alarmed) about the benefits and harms but also help children and young people make more informed decisions.

stem4 is the originator of Online Safety First Aid (OSFA), supported by Ofcom, initially rolled out to professionals working with children and adolescents and now being launched to parents and carers.

Dr Nihara Krause MBE Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr Richard Graham, both experts in this field, help parents and carers transfer their offline parenting skills into the online/digital world. The session covers the following:

  • Neurodevelopment in young people
  • How Persuasive Design impacts upon young people and parents
  • Strategies for discussing media engagement and content
  • How to use The 5 Ps Digital Family Pledge – booklet, template and video guide.
